The 9-point form conversion checklist
A practical checklist for cutting drop-off on any online form: field count, question order, mobile keyboards and error copy.
Most forms lose people long before the submit button. The fix is rarely a redesign — it is a series of small removals.
Cut every field you will not act on
Every field is a question the respondent has to justify answering. If nobody reads the answer within a week of submission, delete the field. Ask for a phone number only when someone will actually call.
Front-load the easy questions
Start with the answers people already know by heart. Momentum matters: once two fields are filled, abandonment drops sharply.
Match the keyboard to the answer
Email fields should open an email keyboard, numbers a numeric pad. On HelloForms this comes from the field type, so choosing the right type is a conversion decision, not a cosmetic one.
Write errors as instructions
"Invalid input" tells nobody anything. "Use a date like 04/08/2026" tells them exactly what to type next.
Show progress honestly
If a form has four pages, say so up front. Surprise pages are the single most common reason people quit halfway.
